The Basics
What Is a Metal Home Kit?
A metal home kit, also called a steel home kit or barndominium kit, is a package of engineered structural components designed to build a steel-framed home on your property.
At My Barndo Plans, we now sell weld-up metal kits. These kits include the engineered structural pieces needed to build the frame, but they are fabricated and welded on site by a qualified crew using engineered drawings.
That means you are not buying a pre-welded building delivered ready to stand. You are buying the structural steel package for a weld-up barndominium or metal home that is designed around our plans and built in the field for your specific project. Tools: Estimate your cost to build.
What makes a steel home kit different?
- → Pre-engineered structure — no guesswork on load calculations
- → Engineered off-site before delivery — faster erection on your land
- → 100% North American-made steel — sourced and fabricated domestically
- → Open clear-span design — no load-bearing interior walls required
- → 26-gauge metal siding & roofing with 40-year color warranty
- → Engineered structural plans included with every kit
- → Customizable floor plans — finalized before fabrication begins
Kit Types
Two Types of Metal Home Kits
Our steel home kits come in two construction systems. The right choice depends on your span requirements, local contractor availability, and how involved you want to be in the build process.

Why Steel
Why Build a Home from a Steel Kit?
Faster Build Time
Pre-engineered and final fabrication components arrive ready to fab.
Locked-In Material Cost
You price the kit upfront and lock in material costs before breaking ground. No surprise lumber price swings and no material shortages mid-build.
Built for Open Spans
Steel's strength-to-weight ratio enables clear-span construction — large open floor plans with no load-bearing interior walls limiting your layout.
Durable & Low Maintenance
Steel framing does not rot, warp, or attract termites. A properly built steel home requires far less structural maintenance than wood-framed alternatives over its lifetime.
Fire & Weather Resistant
Steel does not contribute to fire spread the way wood framing does, and every kit is engineered to meet your local wind and snow load requirements.
Engineered to Your Plan
Every kit is fabricated around your specific floor plan. Structural engineering is included — you are not buying a generic box, you are buying a home designed for your layout.

Steel vs. Wood
Steel Frame Homes vs. Wood Frame Construction
| Steel Home Kit | Traditional Wood Frame | |
|---|---|---|
| Build Speed | ✓ Faster — pre-engineered, fabricated on-site | Slower — framed on-site piece by piece |
| Material Cost Predictability | ✓ Locked in at order — no lumber price swings | Subject to lumber market volatility |
| Open Span Capability | ✓ Clear span up to 200+ ft — no interior load-bearing walls | Limited by load-bearing walls and engineered beams |
| Rot & Pest Resistance | ✓ Steel does not rot, warp, or attract termites | Vulnerable to moisture damage and pest infestation |
| Fire Resistance | ✓ Steel does not contribute to fire spread | Wood framing accelerates fire spread |
| Structural Longevity | ✓ 50+ year structural lifespan with proper care | Highly dependent on climate and maintenance |
| Design Flexibility | ✓ Open floor plans, large windows, flexible layout | Floor plan constrained by structural wall placement |
| Contractor Availability | ✓ Requires a steel erector or welder | General framing crews widely available |
