Building A Cold Formed Steel Home in Colorado

  • By Bill H.

A modified version of our most popular home, The Quinn, is being built in the Valley in Mosca CO

Nestled in the scenic landscape of Mosca, Colorado the Quinn home model from My Barndo Plans (Home Plans, LLC) represents a new way forward in homebuilding. This home isn’t just designed to withstand the elements; it’s also crafted to provide a warm, inviting space for comfortable living.  This custom home is made from a kit we fabricate in the factory out of Cold-Formed Steel from our engineered plans that are stamped for county approval. The Modified Quinn was designed to meet the homeowner’s need for 1,100 sq feet of space. We removed the cover porch from the original Quinn and expanded the living space. The plan was then engineered and stamped before being sent to production.

A Floor Plan Built for Comfort and Livability

The Quinn is more than an engineered sturdy structure; it’s a thoughtfully designed home with every room strategically placed to maximize space and functionality.

Open Living Area
At the heart of the Quinn is an open living area that combines the living room, dining space, and kitchen. This layout fosters a sense of connectivity, allowing family members and guests to move seamlessly from one area to another. The spacious living room invites gatherings, relaxation, and quality time, while the adjacent dining area provides a cozy yet open space for meals, helping to make daily life and entertaining a breeze.

Functional Kitchen Design
The kitchen in the Quinn is both practical and inviting, with plenty of counter space for meal prep and storage options for an organized cooking experience. This isn’t just a kitchen; it’s a space designed to accommodate everyday needs, with features that enhance convenience and ease, making cooking feel less like a chore and more like a pleasure.

Comfortable Bedrooms for Relaxation
The Quinn includes a private master suite, thoughtfully placed for privacy. This room serves as a personal retreat, complete with ample closet space and a spacious en-suite bathroom, allowing homeowners to unwind after a long day. The additional bedrooms are positioned to offer both privacy and easy access to shared areas, making them perfect for family members, guests, or even as a home office or playroom.

Practical Additions for Day-to-Day Living
Beyond the main living spaces, the Quinn includes practical features that make daily tasks easier. A laundry room, conveniently located to streamline household chores, provides ample room for appliances and storage. The pantry next to the kitchen keeps essentials organized and accessible, and additional storage options throughout the home ensure that there’s space for everything. With a well-planned layout and designated storage areas, the Quinn is as functional as it is comfortable.

Innovative Building Materials for Maximum Durability

In designing the Quinn Home Plans, LLC, we selected materials that offer both resilience and sustainability, ensuring that the home is built to last.

Cold-Formed Steel Structure
The foundation of the Quinn’s strength lies in its cold-formed steel (CFS) frame. Known for its exceptional durability, CFS is highly resistant to environmental stressors such as high winds, fire, and even pests like termites. Unlike wood, steel doesn’t warp, crack, or rot, which translates to a home that stands the test of time with minimal maintenance. Moreover, steel is a recyclable material, making it an eco-friendly choice that reduces waste and minimizes the environmental impact of construction.

ZipSystems R3 Sheathing for Insulation and Moisture Control
The Quinn is wrapped in ZipSystems R3 Sheathing, a high-performance material that combines structural strength with water resistance and insulation. This sheathing not only protects the home from moisture and drafts but also enhances energy efficiency by keeping the interior climate stable, whether in the warmth of summer or the chill of a Colorado winter.  The Zip Systems Sheating is the first line of defense insulation. The homeowner will add considerably more insulation. We use the R3 Boards to create a more air-tight home envelope. We do this for all our CFS home kits, not just the ones built in cold climates.

26-Gauge Metal Siding and Roofing
To complete the Quinn’s exterior, 26-gauge metal siding and roofing have been chosen for their durability and sleek appearance. This metal cladding provides long-lasting protection against weather and requires little maintenance, saving homeowners time and money in the long run. Beyond its practical benefits, metal siding and roofing give the Quinn a modern, polished look that fits beautifully into both rural and urban settings.

Faster, More Efficient Construction – “Dried In” in Just 10 Days

One of the standout features of the Quinn model is the speed of construction. Thanks to its CFS structure and the ZipSystems sheathing, this home can be “dried in” within just 10 days, meaning it’s fully protected from the elements. Traditional homes often take weeks or even months to reach this stage, but the Quinn’s innovative design significantly accelerates the timeline.

A faster build means reduced labor costs, fewer delays, and a quicker move-in time. For homeowners, this efficiency minimizes the disruption that typically comes with construction projects, making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

A Home Designed for Modern Living

The Quinn model isn’t just a durable home; it’s a comfortable, livable space designed for modern families. From the open living areas to the practical additions like a laundry room and pantry, every aspect of the Quinn’s floor plan is crafted with the needs of today’s homeowners in mind. Whether you’re hosting friends, spending a cozy night in, or just going about daily routines, the Quinn provides the space, comfort, and functionality that make a house feel like a home.
